About

My name is Suzanne Ward and I started my journey into the piano world in 1987 at the London College of Furniture studying on the Piano tuning course. Previously I had been studying Piano and Bassoon at the Royal College Of Music as a Junior Exhibitioner and had to decide  on Piano tuning or playing as a career.

After leaving college, I worked for Malcom Collins Pianos in Berkhampsted and The Chiltern Piano Company, which led  to  self-employment and a move to Hitchin Hertfordshire when I worked at  Richard Reason Pianos in Hitchin  Hertfordshire for many years working as a Piano tuner/repairer in the local areas.

I also worked for The Piano Man in Arlesey for 10 years looking after their pianos and tunings as well as my own client base which I am currently running.

I look after many different makes of pianos in all kinds of conditions, keeping them going for some that have passed their best but dearly loved by my clients and in various places schools, churches, concert halls and studios as well as  people's homes.

 CARE OF YOUR PIANO

Owning an acoustic piano is a wonderful thing and to keep your instrument in  good performaning shape, here are top five tips:
TUNING
It is important to keep your piano tuned regularly (twice a year general rule) or more for new pianos and pianos played more frequently and of course depending on  the age and condition of the piano.
If the piano is left too long it can be harder to bring back to a good condition and more costly as will need tuning more to restore it back to its original sound.
PEDALS
Whilst the technician is tuning the piano, make sure they check the pedals for any adjustment or squeaks etc.
REGULATION
An acoustic piano has more than 10,000 moving parts and they need to be set to exact specifications for the instrument to feel and sound its best.
CONTROL THE HUMIDiTY
Humidity issues are the real culprit for problems with pianos either sticky notes or squeaky keys and tuning etc.
Common advice for where to place a piano includes staying away from direct vents/radiators etc that cause warm or cool air to be blown near or on the piano. Focusing on the humidity in a room in which the piano lives is an equally important factor in caring for your instrument.

CLEANING

Just like any piece of furniture in your home, you will want to keep your piano looking good, free of dust and fingerprints.

As a rule its best to keep the lid on a grand paino down when not in use as it will serve to protect the insides from dust, dirt and other contaminants. Also keep the key cover down to keep the keys clean.

PIANO CASE CLEANING

As a first step, remove the dust using a feather duster or a dry microfiber cloth without using pressure, then afterwards you can remove fingerprints using a slightly damp cloth or chamois ( a weak solution of washing lquid can be used in the water of the dampened  the cloth).

KEYS

Clean plastic keys using a slightly damp cloth, lint free- microfiber cloth, with water or a mix of mild washing up liquid to wipe away the dirt from  the back of the key to the front then immediately wipe of the excess with a seperate cloth. A diluted solution of white vinegar can also be used on plastic keys.

IVORY KEYS

Clean one key at a time to ensure you don't get water down the side of the keys.

Use a tiny amount of washing up liquid on a damp cloth and press firmly onto the keytop and rub until the dirt is removed ( again, back of key to the front). Polish the key with a soft dry cloth to dry. I f the keys are in a bad condition you may need to  call a technician as more work may be needed.
